You send the work, you write "let me know what you think," and then nothing. Three days later you are refreshing your inbox, the project is stalled, and you are not sure whether to nudge or wait. The problem is almost never that the client hates the work. It is that "let me know what you think" is not a question anyone can answer quickly, so it goes to the bottom of the pile.
Getting a clear answer is a matter of how you ask. Three things turn a stalled deliverable into a decision.
Ask for a decision, not feedback
"What do you think" invites an essay, and most clients do not have an essay ready, so they wait until they do, which is never. "Does this work to move forward, or is there something specific you want changed?" invites a yes or a short list. You want a fork in the road, not an open field.
Name the deliverable, name the decision, and give two clear paths: approve it, or tell you exactly what to change. Anything outside those two should be a separate conversation.
Set a review window
An open-ended request has no reason to be answered today. A request with a date does. "Could you review this by Thursday so we stay on schedule for the launch?" ties the approval to something the client cares about, which is their own timeline, not yours. Keep the window reasonable, usually two or three business days, and tie it to a real consequence ("so the next milestone starts on time"), not an invented one.
If your tooling supports it, an approval that the client can click rather than write beats any email. A button that says "Approve v2" is a far lower bar than composing a reply, and it gives you a timestamped record of who approved what and when. That record matters later if scope is ever disputed.
Make saying yes the easy path
Reduce the work between the client and a yes. Show one version, not three options that force them to deliberate. Point to the specific thing you need eyes on rather than dumping a folder. If there are open questions, list them as numbered items they can answer inline. The more a reply costs in effort, the longer it waits.
